Umezu Masakage Diary - Umezu Masakage Diary

This diary was written by Umezu Masakage (1581-1633), a samurai of the Akita domain, and spans the period from 1612 (Keicho 17) to 1633 (Kan'ei 10). The 25 original volumes have been passed down through the Umezu family, but currently 24 volumes are in the possession of the Akita Public Archives, and the remaining volume (volume 16, part 2) is in the possession of the Senshu Bunko. This diary is Masakage's personal diary, and is not what is commonly called an official diary. However, as Masakage was a person who served as Yamabugyo (magistrate of the mountains) of the Innai silver mine, Soyamabugyo (magistrate of the finances), Karo (chief retainer), and so on, it contains many articles about the official affairs of the Akita domain. Most of the originals can be considered to have been written by Masakage himself, and are in good condition, making them valuable materials that provide concrete insights into the politics, economy, and society of the early Akita domain. They are included in the Dai Nihon Koroku (Records of Ancient Japan).
