Tang Yòng tóng (English spelling)
1893‐1964
Chinese Buddhist scholar. Born in Gansu Province. His courtesy name was Xi Yu. After graduating from Tsinghua School in 1917, he studied at Harvard University in the United States. After returning to China, he became a professor at Southeast University and Nankai University before becoming a professor at Peking University (he moved to Southwestern United University during the Anti-Japanese War). After liberation, he became vice president of Peking University. He had a deep knowledge of Chinese philosophy as well as Western and Indian philosophy, and used comparative analysis methods to conduct research on Chinese Buddhism. His main work is A General History of Buddhism in the Han, Wei, and Jin Dynasties. [Ono Kazuko]

中国の仏教学者。甘粛省に生まれる。字は錫予。1917年,清華学校卒業後,アメリカのハーバード大学に留学。帰国後,東南大学,南開大学教授を経て北京大学教授になった(抗日戦争中は西南聯合大学に移る)。解放後は北京大学副校長。中国哲学はむろんのこと,西洋哲学,インド哲学にも造詣が深く,比較分析の方法を用いつつ中国仏教の研究を行った。主著に《漢魏両晋南北朝仏教通史》がある。【小野 和子】
