1893‐1964 Chinese Buddhist scholar. Born in Gansu Province. His courtesy name was Xi Yu. After graduating from Tsinghua School in 1917, he studied at Harvard University in the United States. After returning to China, he became a professor at Southeast University and Nankai University before becoming a professor at Peking University (he moved to Southwestern United University during the Anti-Japanese War). After liberation, he became vice president of Peking University. He had a deep knowledge of Chinese philosophy as well as Western and Indian philosophy, and used comparative analysis methods to conduct research on Chinese Buddhism.
