Spotted halibut (Hoshigarai)

Japanese: ホシガレイ(星鰈) - ホシガレイ（英語表記）spotted halibut

A marine fish of the family Pleuronectidae in the order Pleuronectiformes. Local names include Makka (Yokohama), Yaitogare (Kobe), and Yamabushi (Tsuruga). A southern species found south of central Honshu, it inhabits coastal sandy and muddy bottoms. The eyed side is dark brown with no markings, while the eyeless side has several large brown marks, and black marks can be seen on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. It is often confused with the barfin flounder, which is a northern species and can be distinguished by the lower height of the front curve of the lateral line and the round marks on its fins. The spawning season is January to February on the west coast of Kyushu and May to June on Isehama Island.

カレイ目カレイ科の海産魚。マッカ(横浜)，ヤイトガレ(神戸)，ヤマブシ(敦賀)などの地方名がある。南方種で本州中部以南に分布し，沿岸の砂泥底にすむ。有眼側は暗褐色で斑紋はなく，無眼側にはいくつかの大きな褐色斑紋が存在し，背びれ，しりびれ，尾びれには黒色斑紋が認められる。マツカワに形態がよく似ており混同されるが，マツカワは北方種で側線の前湾曲部の高さが低いこと，ひれにある斑紋が丸いことで区別できる。産卵期は九州西岸で1～2月，伊勢浜島で5～6月である。
