Rossano Gospels - Rossano Codex

An illustrated Gospel manuscript produced in the 6th century. It is in the possession of the Cathedral of Rossano in southern Italy. It contains the Gospels of Matthew and Mark on 188 purple parchment leaves. It contains 12 illustrations, including "The Entry into Jerusalem" and "Gethsemane," as well as portraits of the Gospel writers and prophets. Its dramatic depiction and distinctive characterization of the characters are similar to the Vienna Genesis, but it reflects a more Eastern tradition and is thought to partly reflect the composition of the murals in the Holy Land of Palestine. It is believed to have been produced in Asia Minor, Antioch, or elsewhere.

6世紀に制作された挿絵入り福音書写本。南イタリアのロッサーノ大聖堂所蔵。紫羊皮紙 188葉にマタイ，マルコ両福音書を含む。「エルサレム入城」「ゲッセマネ」など 12点の挿絵と福音書家の肖像，預言者像が描かれている。劇的な描写性，人物の性格的表現などの特徴はウィーンの『創世記』と似るが，より東方的伝統を反映し，部分的にはパレスチナ聖地の壁画の構図を反映するとも考えられている。小アジア，アンチオキアなどで制作されたものと推定される。
