Medake (female bamboo) - Medake (English spelling) Arundinaria simonii
A species of the genus Pyridoxine in the family Poaceae. It is an evergreen bamboo found in areas west of southern Kanto, Shikoku, and Kyushu, growing in fields, mountains, riverbanks, and seaside. It is also known by other names such as Kawatake, Nayotake, and Nigatake. It grows profusely from underground stems, forming thickets. The culms are about 6m tall, hollow and cylindrical, densely branched at the top, with low nodes and long internodes. The leaves are palmate and grow obliquely from the ends of the branches. They sometimes bloom, but then die. The culms are soft and sticky, so they are used for sieves, fan frames, flutes, and building materials.
