Kodan (traditional story of heroism). It tells the story of three generations of the Yagyu family: Yagyu Muneyoshi, the founder of Yagyu-ryu swordsmanship, his son Yagyu Munenori, who became the shogun's instructor, his eldest son Yagyu Jubei Mitsuyoshi, and Mitsuyoshi's younger brother Yagyu Matajuro (later Hida no Kami Munefuyu). Usually, the story is performed with Munenori, Jubei Mitsuyoshi, and Matajuro (Munefuyu) at the center, but there are also independent kodan stories for each of them. As for Munenori, his encounter with Zen master Takuan and his ten-man challenge are famous. In Yagyu Travel Diary, Jubei Mitsuyoshi investigates the movements of the western daimyo under Iemitsu's orders, and this is known as a typical example of a travel story.
