...But the greatest Latin religious poem of the Middle Ages is the Day of Wrath, a work attributed to Tommaso da Celano (c. 1190-c. 1260), which sings of the Last Judgment and is still commonly used at funeral ceremonies for the dead. The next most famous chant is the Doxology of the Virgin Mary by Jacopone da Todi (c. 1230-1306). Among the many saints, martyrs, and miracle stories produced throughout the Middle Ages, the one that stands out from the early period is the anonymous Life of Saint Genoveva, which is thought to date back to around the 8th century, and the fairly literary Life of Saint Alexis, which was written in vernacular language in the 11th century. ...
