There are tin(II) chloride and tin(IV) chloride. [Tin(II) chloride] The chemical formula is SnCl 2 . It can be obtained by dissolving metallic tin in hydrochloric acid or by electrolytic reduction of an aqueous solution of tin(IV) chloride. The anhydrate is a colorless orthorhombic crystal with a melting point of 246.8°C and a boiling point of 623°C. The dihydrate SnCl 2 ・2H 2 O is a colorless monoclinic crystal that dissolves in water of crystallization at 37.7°C and decomposes into hydrochloric acid and basic tin(II) chloride Sn(OH)Cl. It dissolves in acetone, alcohol, etc. It precipitates as the hydroxide in alkali, but dissolves in excess alkali to become alkaline stannate.
