Japanese: ベニバナボロギク - べにばなぼろぎく

An annual plant of the Asteraceae family native to Africa. The stem is upright, well-branched at the top, and reaches about 1m in height. The leaves are obovate-oblong, stalked, and alternate. The leaf blade is pinnately lobed or toothed, thin, and covered with scattered hairs on both sides. The flowering season is August to October. The flowers are in racemes at the ends of the branches, and bloom as drooping heads. All heads consist of bisexual tubular flowers. The involucre is tubular, 1cm long, with numerous linear bracts at the base. The bracts are in a single row, and curl back after flowering. The corolla is vermilion above and white below. The atrophic fruit is small, 2mm long, but the pappus is over 1cm long, white, and numerous, making it conspicuous.
