A fish of the Salmonidae family in the Salmoniformes order. Also called King Salmon. It is the largest of the salmon genus. It is widely distributed throughout the North Pacific Ocean, from the Sea of Japan northward to the Sea of Okhotsk in Asia, and from Alaska to Southern California in the Americas. Few of them migrate to the waters near Japan, and only occasionally migrate upstream in some rivers, such as the Teshio River in Hokkaido. Its body color is silvery-white, with black spots scattered on its back, dorsal fin, and caudal fin. During the spawning season, it usually migrates upstream in rivers along the North Pacific coast in February and March, travels far upstream from the river mouth, and spawns between August and October.

サケ目サケ科の魚。キングサーモンともいう。サケ属中でもっとも大型になる。アジア側では日本海以北からオホーツク海へ，アメリカ大陸側ではアラスカから南カリフォルニアまで，北太平洋一帯に広く分布する。日本近海に来遊するものは少なく，北海道の天塩川など一部の河川にのみまれに遡上（そじよう）する。体色は銀白色で，体の背部，背びれ，尾びれに黒点が散在する。産卵期は，北太平洋沿岸ではふつう2～3月に河川へ遡上し，河口からはるか上流に至り，8～10月のころ産卵する。
