Inunoshita - dog tongue fish

A marine fish belonging to the order Pleuronectiformes and the family Strigiidae. It is found in areas south of southern Japan, the East China Sea, the South China Sea, and the Yellow Sea. Its snout is hooked and curves ventrally, and its tip does not reach the anterior edge of the lower eye. There are two lateral lines, one on the dorsal edge of the body and one in the center, with 10 to 11 scales between them. There is no lateral line on the eyeless side. There are no whiskers around the mouth. The scales come off very easily. The body is light reddish brown overall. It lives on sandy and muddy bottoms at depths of 20 to 120 meters, and feeds on small crustaceans and polychaetes. It spawns from June to August. It reaches a body length of 14 cm in one year, 26 cm in three years, and 42 cm in four years. It is caught in large quantities using bottom trawls and other methods. It is prepared in dishes such as stews, fries, and meunière. Although it has a slight odor, it has the best taste among the strigiformes. The cardinal fish, Cynoglossus arel , is found south of the East China Sea, in the western Pacific Ocean, and in the Indian Ocean, but it can be distinguished by the fact that it has 7 to 9 scales between its two lateral lines.

硬骨魚綱カレイ目ウシノシタ科に属する海水魚。南日本以南、東シナ海、南シナ海、黄海に分布する。吻(ふん)はかぎ状に腹方へ曲がり、先端は下眼の前縁下に達しない。側線は体の背縁と中央部の2本で、その間に10～11枚の鱗(うろこ)がある。無眼側に側線がない。口の周りにひげ状物がない。鱗はきわめてはがれやすい。体は全体に淡赤褐色。水深20～120メートルの砂泥底にすみ、小型の甲殻類や多毛類などを食べる。産卵期は6～8月ごろ。1年で体長14センチメートル、3年で26センチメートル、4年で42センチメートルになる。底引網などで多量に漁獲される。煮つけ、フライ、ムニエルなどにする。やや臭みがあるものの、味はウシノシタ類のなかで上位である。東シナ海以南、西太平洋、インド洋にテンジクイヌノシタCynoglossus arelがいるが、2本の側線の間の鱗は7～9枚あることで区別できる。
