An insect of the Lepidoptera, Pyralidae family. Also known as the rice leaf moth. A small moth with a span of about 1cm. The leading edge of the forewings and the outer edges of both wings are black-brown. The rest of the moth is yellowish brown. The larvae roll up rice leaves and feed from the inside. They are widely distributed from the Kanto region westward, and are mainly found in paddy fields. They occur three times a year, and if they occur frequently during the autumn heading period, the damage becomes greater. The rice leaf moth, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis , which is similar to this species, is also well known as a pest of grasses, but the leaves that the larvae roll up are not as regularly arranged as this species.
