A city in southern Gifu Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the low marshes of the Nobi Plain, surrounded by the Kiso and Nagara rivers. Takehana, in the center of the city, has been a textile manufacturing area known since the Edo period for its Mino stripes. Along with Bisai City (now Ichinomiya City) in Aichi Prefecture, located across the Kiso River, the city is home to a thriving woolen textile industry. The textile and clothing industries accounted for about 40% (2003) of the city's manufactured goods shipments, and the transportation equipment and chemical industries are also growing. The city is served by the Tokaido Shinkansen, Meitetsu Hashima-Takehana Line, and Meishin Expressway. It also has extensive rice fields, and there are monuments and graves of Satsuma samurai who worked on difficult flood control construction works during the Horeki era (Horeki Flood Control Incident). 53.66 km2 . 67,197 people (2010). 岐阜県南部の市。1954年市制。木曾川と長良(ながら)川に囲まれた濃尾平野の低湿地を占める。中心の竹鼻は江戸時代から美濃縞(じま)で知られた機業地で,木曾川対岸の愛知県尾西(びさい)市(現・一宮市)とともに,毛織物工業が盛ん。繊維・衣服工業で市の製造品出荷額の約4割(2003)を占め,輸送用機器・化学工業も伸びている。東海道新幹線,名鉄羽島・竹鼻線,名神高速道路が通じる。水田も広く,宝暦年間,治水の難工事にあたった薩摩藩士の碑や墓がある(宝暦治水事件)。53.66km2。6万7197人(2010)。
