Japanese: ナマコ(海鼠) - ナマコ

A general term for echinoderms belonging to the class Holothuroidea. All species are marine, living from the intertidal zone to the deep sea floor at depths of several thousand meters, but a very small number of species live a planktonic life in the deep sea. Due to their overall shape, they are known in English as sea cucumbers or sea sausages. Echinoderms generally have a pentad-shaped body, but sea cucumbers have an elongated, cylindrical body between the mouth and anus, and have a distinct front-to-back and dorso-ventral section, giving them secondary bilateral symmetry.

ナマコ綱Holothuroideaに属する棘皮（きよくひ）動物の総称。すべて海産で，潮間帯から水深数千mの深海底まですむが，ごく少数の種類は深海で浮遊生活をしている。全体の形からsea‐cucumber(海のキュウリ)，sea‐sausage(海のソーセージ)の英名がある。一般に棘皮動物の体は5放射相称形であるが，ナマコ類は口と肛門との間がのびて円筒状になり，前後と背腹の区別ができて二次的に左右相称になっている。
