A group of relatives in ancient Greek cities. It is translated as a phyla or brotherhood. Its origins are very ancient. It was usually a part of a tribe (phyle) and was at least theoretically composed of a number of clans (genos). They worshipped a common ancestor, used patronymics, and placed great importance on the worship of a patron deity. Most of them disappeared by the Hellenistic period. It was also used as a translation of the Roman Curia. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
