Morning coat - Morning coat (English spelling)

A formal jacket worn by men during the day. It is made of plain black doeskin or cashmere, and is usually a single-breasted jacket with a fin collar and one button. It has a seam at the waist and the hem of the front is cut at a large angle, but the back usually reaches just below the knee. There is a long vent from the waistline to the hem of the back. The trousers that go with it are black and gray striped. The vest is made of the same fabric as the jacket or a gray background, and can be single-breasted with five or six buttons, or double-breasted with three buttons. The shirt is white and has a wing or double collar. The tie can be black and white striped.

history

In the 19th century, it was a type of cutaway coat (meaning the hem of the front is cut diagonally) that European men wore as everyday wear to distinguish it from the habit, which was a formal jacket. It is said to have evolved from the Newmarket coat, which was used for horse riding, but the seam and the position of the pockets vary slightly depending on the fashion of the time. From the late 19th century, it began to serve as semi-formal daytime wear, and in modern times it has become formal daytime wear.
