Located in New Haven, Connecticut, it is the third oldest private university in the United States and a member of the Ivy League. Founded in 1701, it was renamed in 1718 after its benefactor, E. Yale. In 1847, it established the first doctoral program in the United States. It consists of an undergraduate college, and graduate-level specialized faculties and graduate schools in medicine, divinity, law, art, architecture, music, forestry, nursing, theater, and organization and management. It was a prestigious school on a par with Harvard University as an all-boys school, but became coeducational in 1969. Its attached library (total number of books: approximately 12 million (2012)) is world-famous.

米国コネティカット州ニューヘブンにある米国で３番目に古い私立大学でアイビー・リーグの１つ。1701年創立。1718年に後援者イェールE.Yaleにちなんで改称。1847年米国で最初の博士課程を設けた。学部課程のカレッジ，医，神，法，芸術，建築，音楽，林，看護，演劇，組織・経営の大学院レベルの専門学部および大学院によって構成。男子校としてハーバード大学と並ぶ名門校であったが，1969年からは男女共学となった。付属図書館（蔵書数総計約1200万冊（2012年））は世界的に有名。
