A genre of film. Films depicting mysterious and mysterious phenomena such as supernatural phenomena and paranormal powers. Occult films have been around since the early days of film, but they became popular after Polanski's American film Rosemary's Baby (1968) and W. Friedkin's The Exorcist in 1973, and were named occult films. Since then, hit films such as R. Donner's The Omen (1976) and T. Hooper's Poltergeist (1982) have appeared, and many of them have been made into series. Early films had a strong religious flavor, featuring demons and spirits, and many were made in the 1970s, a time of social turmoil and growing interest in the unknowable, making full use of special effects (SFX), which were becoming popular at the time.

映画の1ジャンル。超自然現象や超能力など，神秘的で不可思議な現象を描いた映画をさす。映画の草創期から扱われてきたが，ポランスキー監督のアメリカ映画『ローズマリーの赤ちゃん』 (1968) ，さらに 73年に話題を呼んだ W.フリードキン監督の『エクソシスト』以来ブームとなり，オカルト映画と命名された。以後，R.ドナー監督の『オーメン』 (76) ，T.フーパー監督の『ポルターガイスト』 (82) などのヒット作が登場，シリーズ化されたものが多い。初期の作品には悪魔や霊魂が登場する宗教的色彩が強く，社会が混乱して不可知なものへの関心が高まった 1970年代に，当時流行しはじめた SFX (特殊撮影技術) を駆使して数多く作られた。
