It refers to a theater that shows "highly artistic" films that are not shown in the general cinema. The French word above means something like "artistic experimental theater," but in Japan it is translated as "art theater," which is a unique Japanese term. In October 1954, several Parisian cinema owners who had established movie theaters that specialized in screening "avant-garde films" in the 1920s formed the Association of French Art Theaters (AFCAE) at the request of the French Central Cinema Agency (CNC). 一般興行からはずされた〈芸術性の高い〉映画を上映する劇場を指す。上記のフランス語は〈芸術実験劇場〉くらいの意だが,日本では〈アート・シアター〉という日本独自の訳語があてられている。1920年代に〈アバンギャルド映画〉を専門に上映する映画館をつくったパリの何人かの館主たちが中心になって,フランス中央映画庁(CNC)の要請で,フランス・アート・シアター協会(AFCAE)を結成したのが54年10月であった。
