A monastery founded in the 6th century on the left bank of the Seine in Paris. It was originally dedicated to the Holy Cross and Saint Vincentius (French: Saint-Vincent), but later came to be named after Saint Germanus (French: Saint-Germain, c. 496-576), the Bishop of Paris who was buried in the monastery. It was venerated since the Merovingian dynasty, and during the reign of Louis the Pious (814-840) during the Carolingian dynasty, it became a major landowner with 80,000 acres and over 10,000 peasants, and played a major role in the administration of the empire.
