The coronary arteries that nourish the heart are divided into two branches, one on the left and one on the right, which emerge from the aortic root and enter the subepicardium. The left coronary artery branches into the anterior descending branch and the circumflex branch, the former of which descends through the anterior interventricular groove toward the apex of the heart and gives off diagonal branches and septal perforators along the way.
