Muslim Uprising - The Broom and the Pistol

Muslim uprisings occurred in the provinces of Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Yunnan, and Guizhou from the 1850s to the 1870s. Muslim rebellions in China can be seen from the Tang dynasty onwards, but the rebellions under the Qing dynasty are particularly problematic. The rebellion that occurred during the Shunzhi period (1644-61) at the beginning of the Qing dynasty was fought by the Hui people (Uighurs) living in East Turkestan against the emerging Manchu dynasty. The rebellion that occurred in the middle of the Qianlong period (1736-95) was a series of Muslim rebellions aimed at recovering lost territories against the Qing dynasty, which had conquered the Dzungars and Hui people and imposed oppressive rule over them.

1850年代から70年代にかけ，陝西･甘粛･寧夏･青海･雲南･貴州の各省に発生した回教徒(イスラム教徒)による蜂起。中国におけるイスラム教徒の反乱は，唐代より散見しうるが，とくに問題になるのは清朝治下での反乱である。清初の順治年間(1644‐61)に起こった反乱は，東トルキスタンに居住する回部(ウイグル)が新興の満州族王朝に対抗したものであった。乾隆年間(1736‐95)のなかばに起こった反乱は，ジュンガルおよび回部を征服し，強圧支配を敷いた清朝に対して，イスラム教徒が失地回復をめざして反乱を繰り返したものである。
