A scholar of Japanese classics during the Meiji Restoration period. Commonly known as Ubei and Jouemon, his pen name was Kugaya. He was the son of Shu Zenuemon, a merchant from Kitsuki (Kitsuki City) in Bungo Province. He studied under the Confucian scholar Motoda Chikukei and the Japanese classics scholar Sadamura Naoyoshi from Buzen, and later became a pupil of Hirata Tetsutane. In 1868 (Meiji 1), he was invited to lecture on Shinto scriptures at the Usa Academy in Buzen, and also served as a professor of Kitsuki Domain and a professor of Japanese classics at the domain school Gakushukan. He was ranked as a samurai, and the following year he became a missionary for the Jingikan, and in 1870 he became a junior doctor of missionary studies. He devoted his efforts to the study of Japanese language, and wrote works such as "Jigakukou" and "Hongenkou," as well as "Shinto Yoron." 幕末維新期の国学者。通称は卯兵衛,丈右衛門。号は葎屋。豊後国杵築(杵築市)の商人物集善右衛門の子。藩儒元田竹渓,豊前の国学者定村直好に学び,のち平田銕胤の門に入る。明治1(1868)年豊前の宇佐学館に請われて神典を講義,また杵築藩教授方,藩校学習館国学教授を兼任,士族に列せられ,翌年神祇官宣教使,3年宣教権少博士となる。国語の研究に力を注いだ『辞格考』『本言考』,また『神道余論』などの著がある。子の高見は『広文庫』の編者で言文一致運動を推進した。<参考文献>大分県教育会編『増補改訂大分県偉人伝』,杵築町委員会編『杵築郷土史』
