A slender snail shell of the family Algalidae, common in northern Japan, with a thick, straw-colored, coarse, hairy skin covering the shell surface (illustration). For this reason, it is also called ketubu. The shell is 13 cm high, 7 cm wide, has about 7 coils, is white, somewhat thin, and fragile. Each layer bulges out and has a rough texture on the surface with a mix of horizontal and vertical ribs. The last coil is large and extends downward. The shell skin peels off from the top as it ages. The shell opening is also large and egg-shaped, with a white interior. It narrows at the bottom to form a grooved water tube. The lid is egg-shaped, somewhat thick, leathery, and black-brown in color.

北日本に多い殻表にわら色で粗い毛状の厚い皮をかぶった細長いフジツガイ科の巻貝（イラスト）。そのためケツブともいう。殻は高さ13cm，太さ7cm，7巻きくらいしていて，白く，やや薄くてもろい。各層は丸く膨らんで，表面に横の肋と縦の肋とが交ざって粗い布目をつくる。最後の巻きは大きくて下方へのびる。殻皮は老成すると上のほうからはげる。殻口も大きく卵形で，内面は白色。下方は狭くなって溝状の水管になる。ふたは卵円形でやや厚い革質で黒褐色。
