Mozumetakami - A collection of works

Japanese: 物集高見 - もずめたかみ
Mozumetakami - A collection of works

A scholar of Japanese literature and language. He was born on May 28, 1845, in Kitsuki, Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture) as the eldest son of the Japanese scholar Takayo (1817-1883). After receiving his family education, he studied Dutch studies in Nagasaki, and at the end of the Edo period, he studied Japanese literature under the loyalist Tamamatsu Misao in Kyoto. After the Meiji Restoration, he worked for the Shinto government and the Ministry of Education, and was a professor at the Faculty of Letters of the Imperial University (now the Faculty of Letters of the University of Tokyo), Gakushuin, and Kokugakuin. His achievements include his theory on the national polity, as well as Genbun Itchi (1886), which advocated the need for unification of spoken and written language, and Kotoba no Hayashi (1888), a new style Japanese dictionary (later published as Nihon Daijirin). In 1899 (Meiji 32), he resigned from his position as a professor at Tokyo Imperial University, and completed Gunsho Index (1916) and Hiro Bunko (20 volumes, 1916-1918) on his own, at the expense of his family's possessions. He died on June 23, 1928.
