A city in eastern Java, Indonesia. Population: 80,000. Located 32km southwest of Surabaya, at the peak of the Brantas River Delta. The surrounding area is fertile, producing a lot of rice and sugarcane. A fossil of a primitive man (Pithecanthropus mojokertensis) was discovered in the vicinity in 1934. Historically, it was the center of eastern Javanese culture, and 10km southwest of the city are the ruins of Tra-Uulan, the capital of the Majapaite Kingdom, which flourished in the early modern period. The city's name means "City of the Majapaites." The city also has an area that imitates a canal and houses from the Dutch colonial period, but it is especially famous for the history museum built on General Yani Street.
