Korean Language Society Incident
This incident was planned as part of the government-general's 1942 measures to suppress the Korean language. The Korean Language Society had been actively engaged in activities to educate and popularize the Korean language, such as creating a "Plan for the Unification of Hangul Writing System" and publishing its journal, "Hangul." However, as the country moved toward a war footing, the suppression of the use of the Korean language intensified. With the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941, the suppression became more blatant, and in October of the following year, a large number of members of the Korean Language Society were arrested on the grounds of violating the Peace Preservation Law, held in the Hongwon Police Station detention center for a year, and then escorted to Hamhung. Of the approximately 30 people who were detained, 13 were put on trial, but two died in prison from torture during the trial, and 11 defendants were sentenced to 2 to 6 years in prison, and the Korean Language Society was dissolved.
