Stoss, Veit
Born: 1447/1448. Nuremberg
Died in 1533. German sculptor from Nuremberg. A representative sculptor of the late Gothic style, and the greatest wood sculptor of his time. He lived in Krakow, Poland from 1477 to 1496, and produced works such as the Great Altar of St. Mary's Cathedral (1477-89) and the Tomb of Casimir IV (1492). He returned to Nuremberg in 1496, and produced works such as the Annunciation (1517-18) for St. Lorenz Cathedral. His works are characterized by their gorgeous form, precise detail, and dramatic inner expression.
