A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family. It is found in Japan, China, the Korean peninsula, and other areas, and usually grows in sunny wetlands and fields on flat land. The underground stems are long and creep up into the ground, with stems and roots emerging from the nodes. The stems are erect and grow to a height of 5-20 cm, with several small linear leaves at the base, each 5-8 cm long and 2-3 mm wide. Flowers bloom in summer, with numerous spikelets densely packed together at the end of the stem to form a single head inflorescence. There are 2-4 capsules at the base of the inflorescence, which are leaf-like and long and open. The spikelets are slightly flattened, oblong-lanceolate, and 3-3.5 mm long.
