A scholar of Japanese classics who was active from the end of the Edo period to the early Meiji period. Born on November 17, 1826 in Azo, Kume Village, Kita County, Iyo Province (present-day Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture). At the age of 24, he went to Edo and became a disciple of Hirata Atsutane after his death, and also entered the Shoheiko Academy, where he interacted with many scholars and writers. In 1863 (Bunkyu 3), he became a teacher for the Shirakawa family, and in 1867 (Keio 3), he became head of the Yoshida family. During the Restoration of Imperial Rule, he participated in the Shoheiko ceremony as a guest of Iwakura Tomomi along with Tamamatsu Misao and others, making many proposals and petitions, but he is best known for his "Kenkin Sengo" (1867), which outlined the policy of the new government. In the Meiji era, he served in the Shinto priesthood, as the head of the family tree investigation department, as the head of the history museum, and as head of the literature department at the Koten Kokyusho. He was known for his extensive knowledge and strong memory, and for his scholarly style that focused on historical research.
