A liverwort of the family Pyrrhocephalidaceae. Widely distributed worldwide, in Japan it is quite common from around human settlements to mountainous areas, growing in colonies on stone walls, rocks and on the ground. The plant is leaf-like and forked, 2-4 cm long, 5-7 mm wide, leathery, pale green on the dorsal surface and reddish purple to blackish purple on the ventral surface, with margins that turn over when dry. Monoecious. The gynoecium stalk is 3-5 cm long, the head is bell-shaped and usually has four lobes, and each lobe produces one sporophyte enclosed in an insula. ジンガサゴケ科の苔類。世界に広く分布し,日本では人家の周辺から山地までかなり普通に産し,石垣上,岩上,地上に群生する。植物体は葉状で叉状(さじよう)に分岐し,長さ2~4cm,幅5~7mm,革質で背面は淡緑色,腹面は紅紫色~黒紫色,乾くと辺縁がめくれる。雌雄同株。雌器托の柄は長さ3~5cm,頭部は陣笠状でふつう4裂し,各裂片の下に包膜に包まれた1個の胞子体を生じる。雄器托は無柄,円形でいぼ状,多数の造精器を内蔵する。
