A device that reads characters. There are those that read characters optically and those that use magnetic ink. The former, optical character readers, are also called OCR, short for optical character reader, and are devices that optically read printed or handwritten characters, recognize character patterns, and input them as character codes. Early devices only supported a limited number of printed characters, such as numbers and letters, and used special character shapes that were suitable for mechanical reading.
