An annual or biennial plant of the family Oleaceae, native to North Africa. Also called sweet sedum. It was introduced to Japan by a Dutch ship towards the end of the Edo period and is cultivated for ornamental purposes. The stem stands upright at about 30 cm in height and branches well near the base, forming a pyramidal shape. The leaves are alternate, spatula-shaped or oblong, 3-5 cm long, and entire. In summer, the racemes form terminal inflorescences and produce small pale yellow-white flowers. There are six petals, four of which have thin lobes at the ends. They give off a strong fragrance when they bloom, so they are grown in pots and flower beds.
