'Abbās Eqbāl

A modern Iranian historian and man of letters. Born to a Tehran bazaar craftsman, he worked as a carpenter while attending the town's maktab (temple school). He continued to study hard and graduated from the highest educational institution, Darol Fonun. This upbringing enriched his studies of history with a strong populist appeal. In 1925, he studied at the Sorbonne. After returning to Japan, he became a professor at Tehran University, where he edited the magazine Yadgar, revised important Persian documents, and was involved in the publication of his masterpiece, History of the Mongols. He died in Rome.

近代イランの歴史家，文学者。テヘランのバーザール職人の子に生まれ，大工仕事をしながら町の寺子屋(マクタブ)に通った。その後も苦学を続け最高学府ダーロル･フォヌーンを卒業した。このような生い立ちは彼の歴史学を民衆性豊かなものにした。1925年，ソルボンヌに留学。帰朝後，テヘラン大学教授に就任し，雑誌《ヤードガール》の編集，重要ペルシア語文献の校訂，代表作《モンゴル史》等の出版に携わった。ローマで客死。
