A general term for insects in the Geometridae family of the Lepidoptera order. The family with the second largest number of species after the Noctuidae, with nearly 800 known species in Japan alone, including the mulberry geometridae (illustration), mugwort geometridae, dragonfly geometridae (illustration), and yellow spotted geometridae (illustration), and tens of thousands of species have been registered worldwide. The larvae are called inchworms (measuring worms). Generally, Lepidoptera larvae (caterpillars, hairy caterpillars) have five pairs of abdominal legs, but the Geometridae family only have the sixth and tenth abdominal legs (tail legs), and therefore walk in a unique way.
