A large fern with an upright, tall stem that is widely distributed in the tropics and subtropics, and is different from so-called woody plants. Most of them belong to the Cyatheaceae family, and the Cyatheaceae family is also a tree fern. The Cyatheaceae family consists of about 600 to 1500 species, and many of them have stems with scales, a complex central column, and large pinnate compound leaves that grow in clusters at the stem apex. Many of the leaf petioles have thorns in addition to scales, and this morphology is used to classify the Cyatheaceae family. On the other hand, the Cyatheaceae family was once classified as a Cyatheaceae family because of the shape of the ring, but it is distinguished from the Cyatheaceae family because it has no scales, only hairs, and sporangia on the leaf margins. In Japan, there are the Cyatheaceae family such as the Japanese ferns, the round beech, the black ferns, the ferns, and the Japanese ferns, and the Cyatheaceae family such as the Japanese ferns. The stems of tree staghorn fern are used as wood for growing epiphytic orchids and as supports for ivy.

熱帯・亜熱帯に広く分布する，茎が直立して高く伸びる大型のシダのことで，いわゆる木本とは異なる。そのほとんどはヘゴ科に属するもので，ほかにタカワラビ科も木生シダである。ヘゴ科は約 600～1500種から成り，茎は鱗片を有し，複雑な中心柱をもち，茎頂に大型の羽状複葉を叢生するものが多い。葉柄には鱗片のほかにとげのあるものが多く，その形態はヘゴ科の分類に用いられる。一方，タカワラビ科は，環帯の様子から古くはヘゴ科に入れられていたが，鱗片がなく毛だけをもち，胞子嚢群が葉縁につくなどの点で，ヘゴ科から区別される。日本には，ヘゴ科のヒカゲヘゴ，マルハチ，クロヘゴ，ヘゴ，メヘゴなどや，タカワラビ科のタカワラビがある。ヘゴの茎はヘゴ材として，着生ランなどの栽培，アイビーの支柱などに利用されている。
