Before the Sengoku period, it was an independent island floating on Lake Biwa, forming Okushima Manor. The Edo period geography book Omi no Kuni Yochi Shiryaku states that it is located northwest of Kitanosho, is not connected to the mainland, and is separated by a reed marsh. Okushima consists of the villages of Ohama, Shirabe, Maruyama, Okushima, Kitatsuda, and Nakanosho, and in ancient times was a mikuriya that offered tribute to the imperial court in the form of mube, icefish, crucian carp, trout, and ameuo.
