Dress - Mogi

Japanese: 裳着 - もぎ
Dress - Mogi
〘Noun〙 A ceremony in which aristocratic girls wear a formal kimono for the first time after they have grown up. It is held on an auspicious day before marriage, when they are about 12 or 13 years old, and a koshiyui (loin tie) that has been requested in advance is used to tie the waist of the kimono. ※Tonbo (c. 974), part 2: "Imakashikonaru and everyone else are now saying, 'Mogisen,'" [Etymology] (1) A coming-of-age ceremony for women, as opposed to the coming-of-age ceremony for men. In the past, the coming-of-age ceremony consisted of the first hairpin (Hatsukogai) , which is a way of tying up hanging hair, but this fell out of use with changes in clothing and hairstyles, and the ceremony of wearing a formal kimono began to be held. Examples of this being written as "kimono" can already be seen in "Teishin Koki," and "mogi" is the Japanese reading of "kimono."
(2) Basically, it is an important rite of passage that assumes marriage, so the role of koshi-gi is usually played by the head of the family. If a person falls into poverty and has no guardian, they may not be able to wear the kimono, and there are cases where they remain girls even after reaching adulthood.
