Nabeshima Naoshige

Japanese:
Nabeshima Naoshige

A military commander in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. The eldest son of Nabeshima Kiyofusa, a local lord in Hizen. In the spring of 1541 (Tenbun 10), he was adopted by Chiba Tanetsura, lord of Ogi Haruke Castle, but in 1551 he left the Chiba family and returned to Saga. He later served Ryuzoji Takanobu and fought in various places, and after Takanobu was defeated and killed in a battle with the Shimazu and Arima armies in 1584 (Tensho 12), he demonstrated leadership within the Ryuzoji regime and gradually gained real power. He secured his position as the ruler of the Hizen Saga domain when Toyotomi Hideyoshi participated in the war following his order to dispatch troops to Korea. In the Battle of Sekigahara, his eldest son Katsushige joined the Western Army, so after the war, in order to keep his territory, he sought the help of the monk Genkitsu and others, and avoided confiscation by killing the Tachibana clan of Yanagawa in Chikugo. He retired in 1610 (Keicho 15). He died on June 3, 1610 (Genna 4).
