Williamsburg (English spelling)

Japanese: ウィリアムズバーグ(英語表記)Williamsburg
Williamsburg (English spelling)
A historic city in southeastern Virginia, United States. It is located between the James and York rivers, about 70 km east-southeast of Richmond. It was called Middle Plantation until 1698. In the 18th century, it was a small city with a population of less than 2,000, but it was more important than any other city as the political and cultural center of the British colony and as the stage for the independence movement. It was the state capital from 1699 to 1780, but the state office was then moved to Richmond. In 1926, with the assistance of J.D. Rockefeller, the town was restored to its colonial form, and the entire town now looks like a history museum. It is home to the College of William and Mary (founded in 1693), the second oldest university in the country after Harvard University, and is the alma mater of such presidents as T. Jefferson and J. Monroe. Population 11,530 (1990).
