Born: February 11, 1567 in Marseille [Died] June 1, 1625. Villefranche-sur-Mer. French novelist. Born in the Forêt region of southern France to an aristocratic family influenced by the Renaissance and fond of literature, he studied at the Collège de Tournon, then joined the Catholic League and was twice imprisoned. After Henry IV's victory, he sought refuge in exile with his maternal relatives, the House of Savoy, and wrote the pastoral poem Sirène (1604) and Épîtres morales (1598-1608), which is recognized as being Neo-Platonist. His lengthy pastoral tale L'Astrée (5 parts, 07-27), written in verse, had a great influence on the literature and emotional life of his time with its analysis of the psychology of love.
