Cherry blossom viewing in the tenement house

Cherry blossom viewing in the tenement house

Rakugo. The Kamigata rakugo "Binbou Hanami" (Poor Cherry Blossom Viewing) was brought to Tokyo in the 1890s by the second Chokarou Baraku. The people in the poor tenement decided to go cherry blossom viewing, but at the suggestion of the owner of the tenement, they decided to substitute bancha tea for sake, daikon radish for kamaboko, and takuan (pickled radish) for tamagoyaki (rolled omelette). They went to Mukojima with the idea, but the atmosphere was not very lively. Someone composed a haiku after munching on the "tamagoyaki" (rolled omelette) and letting the "sake" stand on end. "A cherry blossom viewing with teeth clenched in the tenement." Even if they were told to get drunk quickly, they could not get drunk with bancha tea. One person drank too much tea and felt sick, and when asked how he felt, he replied, "I felt like I had fallen into a well." Meanwhile, a fake fight breaks out, and the cherry blossom viewing guests, accompanied by geisha and hokan, run away, leaving behind their sake and snacks, so the tenement residents steal them and start a real drinking party. Seeing this, the hokan brandishes a square barrel and yells at the crowd, but is instead threatened by the tenement residents. "The truth is, we wanted you to dance," "Then what's with that barrel," "We've brought some more sake." This is a specialty of Yanagiya Kosan 5.
