When a typhoon or strong low pressure system is over the sea, it is a sound like distant thunder that can be heard on nearby shores. It can be heard even several kilometers away from the coast. For example, it can be heard in some places in Miyazaki City, which is 5 to 6 kilometers away from the coast. It often sounds like distant thunder on the Pacific coast in Miyazaki Prefecture and Kochi Prefecture, and like a single cannon shot in the Seto Inland Sea and Osaka Bay. It is said to be the sound of water colliding with water when swells or waves break near the coast, or the sound of compressed air being caught in the water and gushing out from a gap. The roar of the sea can generally be heard a little away from the coast, but in recent years it has become rare to hear it in cities due to the noise caused by urbanization. The roar of the sea is one indicator of the approach of a typhoon or low pressure system.
