…Luther published several revisions of the Old and New Testaments after 1522, but Luther's German language was still unconventional and unreliable, especially in the morphology and orthography of words. Since the 16th century, many grammarians have tried to standardize German, but in the mid-17th century, Georg Schottel, in his series of works on German grammar, systematized and standardized German grammar to an unprecedented extent, and German was finally able to have a solid standard. He acknowledged the superiority of the Meissen dialect, which was the basis of Luther's German language, but he also took into account Southeastern German and advocated the creation of a standard German language, hochdeutsch, which was not limited to a specific region or dialect, and this idea was passed down to later generations. …

…ルターは1522年以降も数回にわたって新･旧約聖書の改訂版を出すが，ルターのドイツ語は，とくに語の形態と正書法においてはいまだ規範をもたず，確固としたものではなかった。そこで16世紀以来多くの文法家たちがドイツ語の規範化に努めるが，その中でもとくに，17世紀中ごろ，ショッテルGeorg Schottelは一連のドイツ文法に関する著作において，それ以前には見られないほどに，ドイツ文法の体系化･規範化を行い，ここにドイツ語は初めて確固とした規範をもつことになった。彼は，ルターのドイツ語の基礎となるマイセン方言の優位を認めはしたが，一方で東南部ドイツ語をも考慮に入れ，ある特定の地域･方言に限定されない抽象物としての標準ドイツ語hochdeutschというものを主張したが，その考えはのちの時代に受け継がれることになった。…
