<br /> This rock shelter site is located in a small hill 200m from the coast in Sakaemachi, Yoichi-cho, Yoichi-gun, Hokkaido. It is believed to belong to the post-Jomon period, about 1500 to 2000 years ago, and is highly valuable as a cave site. In particular, the numerous images carved into various parts of the walls are rare examples, and are important materials for understanding ancient northern culture. The cave has an entrance of about 4m, a height of about 5m, and a depth of about 5m, and there are more than 200 intaglios carved into the inner walls, including boats, fish, sea creatures, four-legged animals, and people disguised with horns and wings. There are also images such as dots, which are presumed to have a magical nature. Inside the cave, there is a layer of rock containing artifacts about 7m thick, and thin-handled pottery, stone tools, and bone and horn tools have been excavated. It is said that the first person to discover this site was a junior high school student who came to the beach from Sapporo. He informed his older brother, a high school student who was a member of the local history research club, and the site became known. Formal excavation surveys were carried out in 1951 and 1953, and in the same year it was designated as a national historic site. Since 1972, the wall carvings have been preserved and exhibited in a capsule facility and are open to the public.
