A city in southern Ontario, Canada. Located in a dairy farming region surrounded by the Great Lakes, it is known for the Shakespeare Festival, which has been held every summer since 1953 in a park of about 50 hectares. The settlement was founded on the banks of the Little Thames River in 1832 and was called by the same name. However, when the river was renamed Avon, the settlement's name was changed in 1835 to its current name, after Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford-on-Avon. It was incorporated as a city in 1985. There are railway carriage factories, machine factories, and light industries, but tourism and the arts also form the city's economic base. Population: 27,666 (1991). Stratford |
