〘 noun 〙 A blind monk. In particular, a blind monk who visits houses, recites Jishinkyo while playing the biwa, and travels around practicing the law of Tsuchikōjin. 〘名〙 盲目の僧侶。また特に、家々を訪れて琵琶を弾きながら地神経(じしんきょう)を唱え、土荒神の法を修行して歩く盲目の僧。天台宗に所属し、九州・中国地方を中心に諸国に分布していたが、現在は九州のみに存在する。※禁令考‐前集・第五・巻四二・享保一三年(1728)九月三日「盲僧之儀に付御触書 地神経読盲目、官位院号袈裟停止之儀、先年被二仰出一候処に」
