1885‐1938
Soviet government and party activist. Graduated from St. Petersburg University. Joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party in 1904. He was involved in organizational activities within the country, was arrested, and went into exile repeatedly, and after the February Revolution he became an organizational activist in the military. He was one of the People's Commissars of Military Affairs when the Soviet government was established, and in November 1917 he became Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces. In March 1918 he moved to legal affairs, becoming one of the organizers of courts and prosecutors' offices in the Soviet Union, and writing numerous books on the Soviet legal system while also working hard to develop mountaineering and chess. He was arrested and died in prison in 1938.

ソ連邦の政府と党の活動家。ペテルブルグ大学卒。1904年,ロシア社会民主労働党に入党。国内での組織活動と逮捕,亡命をくり返し,二月革命後は軍隊での組織活動を行う。ソビエト政府成立時の軍事人民委員の一人で,17年11月には軍最高総司令官。18年3月より法務関係の活動に移り,ソ連における裁判所と検事局の組織者の一人となり,ソ連法体制に関する多数の著作を著す一方,登山やチェス競技の発展にも力を尽くした。38年,逮捕され獄死。
