Ornithorhynchus anatinus; platypus; duckbill
A monotreme member of the Platypus family. Body length 30-45cm. Its name comes from the resemblance of its mouth to a duck's beak. It has paws on its legs, which are adapted to life underwater. Its hair is dense and velvety black-brown. It is semi-aquatic and lives in holes near water. Males have claws on their hind legs that contain poison glands. Females lay 2-3 eggs, each about 18mm in diameter. The young that hatch from the eggs grow on their mother's milk. It eats earthworms, crayfish, frogs, etc. It is found in eastern Australia and Tasmania, inhabiting lush lowlands near rivers and lakes, and forests up to 2000m above sea level.
