...This film portrayed the sexual customs of American women just after World War I in the most daring and erotic way, creating unprecedented controversy in Hollywood history, and giving birth to the DeMille legend. The original work was the play Crichton's Love (1902) by JM Barrie, known as the author of Peter Pan, and the screenplay for the film was written by actress Jeanie McPherson. Sensing the rise of the avant-garde women of the time, the so-called "flappers," DeMille cast a new type of actress, Gloria Swanson, who was neither pure nor seductive, in his films The Man Who Loved Her and The Woman Who Loved Her (both 1919). In his sequel, A Man and a Woman, he satirically depicted the reversal of the master-servant relationship between British aristocrats and servants in a situation in which a butler (Thomas Megan) stranded on a deserted island bosses around his mistress (Swanson). ...
